The 63rd annual Grammy award celebration is here and once again, we ask ourselves, why is this particular award so important to an artiste career?
The Grammy award is the first and the biggest award in the music industry globally. Artiste are awarded for outstanding achievements in the music Industry. It is considered one of the four major annual American entertainment awards, along with the Academy Awards (film), the Emmy Awards (television), and the Tony Awards (theater and Broadway). No doubt, this is the highest recognition you can get as a music artiste due to the fame and popularity that comes with it.
Has any Nigerian ever won this prestigious award? Yes! It’s not common knowledge but Nigeria has won this award several time : Sade Adu, Sikiru adepoju, Olusegun Adeolu Samuel, Lekan Babalola and also several others who were nominated. Let’s note that King Sunny Ade was the first person to be nominated for the award, Lekan Babalola was the first Nigerian to win the award and Sada Adu was the first Nigerian singer to bring it home. It seems the Nigerian industry lost touch to winning the award for sometime until recently when Burna Boy got nominated.
We need to understand why it’s important to bring home the award. The Nigerian music industry has witnessed massive growth and with that growth comes the rising need for international visibility and dominance. How else can we put our name and style of music all over the world but by winning a famous and highly respected award.
