Fast-rising Nigerian singer Temilade “Tems” Openiyi’s fame has increased at a breakneck pace, and she shows no signs of slowing down. The multi-talented singer basks in the adoration of her millions of admirers. Her lifestyle is as one-of-a-kind as her music, which is different, catchy, and revealing of her unique self. All of these and many more are why we believe Tems is the next big thing to come out of Nigeria.
The 26-year-old soul-stirring vocalist Tems, with a distinctive voice and delivery, is an important component of Wizkid’s mega-success single “Essence.” Her magical voice on ‘Essence,’ earned her BET’s Amplified Artist of the Month for August 2021.
The Nigerian singer recently reached a big milestone on Spotify’s streaming platform. On the music streaming site Spotify, the soulful singer, songwriter, and producer hit a record of 7,000,000 monthly listeners. This makes her the first female artist in Africa to break the record.
Drake revealed his new album via a series of billboards across different locations. He shocked his followers by introducing his ‘CLB’ features in a very unique way. The Canadian rapper has put up billboards in the locations where the album’s featured musicians live, like in Lagos. Tems is the first Nigerian female artiste to be featured with Drake.
Perhaps what makes Tems so refreshing is that, despite her numerous successes and honors, she comes off as completely genuine. In an interview with Fader she said, “To find her true tune, she stopped listening to other musicians when she was 15.” and we agree Tems is riding a wave that she has created, and we’re all aboard on the ride with her.
Though Tems is still in the early stages of her career, it’s plain that she’s already in competition with, if not exceeding, many of her predecessors.
With the many international record-breaking feats under her belt and millions of streams under her belt, she has the world at her fingertips.
Tems, the unique voice in Wizkid’s “Essence,”, by breaking many records is slowly becoming a national export. And has done all of these whilst relentlessly producing her songs. The hit-making songstress has said she will be releasing more songs in 2021, should we expect more record-breaking moments?
