The 16th edition of The Future Awards “Celebrating Challengers and Builders” took place at Lagos’s federal palace hotel hosted by Nancy Isime.
The Future Awards rewards young talents who have made outstanding achievements yearly. This year, brands such as Infinix, Cool FM, Hip TV, Triller, and a host of others supported the awards to encourage and inspire young talents to keep chasing their dreams.
There are several award categories, but for The Future Awards Africa Prize For Music, the nominees were; Joeboy, Ayra Starr, Fireboy DML, Tems, Ckay, BNXN (Formerly Known as BUJU), and Omah Lay. Tems emerged as the winner of this category.
Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, officially began her music career in 2013 after releasing her first EP, “Time Swap EP.” Her first recognized single, “Mr. Rebel,” has close to 2milion views on YouTube.
After that came her album “Illumination” in 2018, she followed it up with another single, titled “Looku Looku,” a widely accepted song, with massive air-plays on Nigerian radio stations. Tems measured up with another hit single, “Try me,” in 2019, solidifying her name as an outstanding music artist. ‘Try me’ has gained over 10 million views on YouTube alone.

Other songs she has released and featured in include; Love Me Down, Falling, Twisted Tilde, Tales By Moonlight, Time Swap, Good Time, These Days, Know your Worth, and the sensational award-winning feature with Wizkid ‘Essence’.
In 2019, Tems was nominated for the Best Vocal Performance (Female) and Best Alternative Song for her single “Mr. Rebel” during the Headies award.
In 2021, Tems’s collaboration with African music giant Wizkid fully launched her into the global music space. Her most recent album, “If Orange Was A Place,” currently has the highest record on Boomplay with over 3million streams.
